Foot & Ankle Surgeries

What is Foot & Ankle Surgeries

Surgery may be not be necessary for many ankle problems; therapy and medications may be enough to resolve the issue. But when ankles are badly broken, deformed, unstable or cause constant pain, surgery may be the only answer.

Ankle problems that may need surgery include:

  • Fractured ankle.
  • Arthritis that causes pain and immobility.
  • Chronic ankle instability from multiple sprains or other causes.
  • Deformity of the ankle.
  • Chronic tendonitis/synovitis of the ankle.

What are the types of Ankle surgery?

Tendon surgery. With chronic tendonitis/synovitis of the ankle, surgery can be as simple as taking out diseased tendon tissue or repairing a tear.

Ankle replacement: During ankle replacement surgery, doctors carefully remove the damaged ankle joint.

Ankle fracture surgery: If you have fractured bones in your ankle (a broken ankle), surgery can stabilize the breaks and help the bone heal.

Procedures

The procedures below are performed either with arthroscopy or with a combination of arthroscopic and open surgery:

  • Rotator cuff repair
  • Repair or resection of torn cartilage (meniscus) from the knee or shoulder
  • Reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee
  • Removal of the synovium in the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, or ankle
  • Release of the carpal tunnel in the wrist
  • Repair of torn ligaments
  • Removal of loose bone or cartilage in the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, or ankle

Treatments

Surgery for the fracture of an ankle is done when the ankle bones are unstable and require more support to heal. A few milder fractures – when the ankle is stable and the broken bone is not out of place – may not require surgical repair. Different types of ankle surgery treat different medical conditions or injuries affecting the ankle. Ankle problems that may need surgery include:
  1. Arthritis that causes pain and immobility
  2. Fractured ankle
  3. Ankle deformity
  4. Chronic ankle instability from numerous sprains or other causes
  5. Chronic synovitis/tendonitis of the ankle
The two most common ankle surgery procedures are ankle fusion and ankle replacement.

What are the Benefits of Ankle Surgery?
